Happy Independence Day

You are free from my love,
the love that thought
there was no one else
in this world but you.

You are free from my care,
the care that believed
taking care of you
was my only responsibility.

You are free from my eyes,
the eyes that always saw you
as the most precious person
in my life.

You are free from my presence,
the presence that only wanted
to see you smile,
to see you happy.

You are free from my words,
the words that always praised you,
because to me,
you were always worthy
of every praise.

You are free from my touch,
the touch that felt like heaven
every time you touched me.

You are free from my companionship,
from this soul that only wanted
to walk beside you for the rest of its life.

Maybe my love felt like a prison to you.
Maybe my care felt like a burden.
Maybe my presence
was something you wanted to escape.

So today,
I will not hold you anymore.

I set you free.

Not because
my love was not true,
but because sometimes
loving someone
also means having the courage
to let them go.

You are independent now,
free from the love
that only wanted to call you its own.

So, on this Independence Day,
I have only one thing to say…

Happy Independence Day
from the person
who still loves you,
but has finally learned
to set you free.
